Margareta Schwab was the oldest of five children of Johann Ernest Schwab and Eva Maria Barbara Heinlein Schwab. She was born in Boxbrunn, N18, Germany. Boxbrunn was a very small place with only nine houses. Her family's house was a big three story place built of quarry stone with thick walls. When Margareta was 27 and the youngest of her siblings (Lenhard Johann Schwab) reached the age of 13, the German army was beginning to mobilize, and it was apparent that the two sons would have to take military training. So the family sold their farm and paid 600 marks for the trip to the United States. They arrived in New York on March 21 1895 on the ship Lahn from Bremen and traveled to Colorado where Margareta's brother and grandfather had already established themselves. The following year (1896), she married John Green there in Silver Cliff. They had eight children. The first five children (Leonard Karl Green called Charles b. 1897; Emma Bertha Green (Mikkelsen) b. 1898; twins John Simon Green and Bertha Emma Green (Mikkelsen) b. 1899; and Henry August Green b. 1901) were born in Colorado. Then the family moved to Idaho where the remaining three children (Margareta "Greta" Green (Clark) b 1904, Leonard Fred Green b 1907, and Nellie Mae Green (Jackson) b. 1909) were born. Greta was apparently fostered or adopted at the age of five by a family in Weisner. The family moved to Oregon where they remained.
