THADDEUS DENSMORE
(5th child of John & Dorcus Densmore)

Thaddeus Densmore, born at Strongsville, Ohio Mar. 30, 1827 and came to Michigan with his parents when he was 3 years of age, locating at Pittsfield, Washtenaw Co., Michigan.

In the spring of 1840, the entire family came to Ingham County when Thaddius was 13 years old, hence he spent his school and young manhood days on the old farm on section 28 in Ingham Township.

He married Charlotte Dixon, who died soon after the marriage in 1850. About two years later he married a sister, Lovisa Dixon and they went to keeping house on the first farm west of the "old home place" and known as the Fields and Manges Farm. Later they moved to Dansville on the farm in the East end of the Village where 5 of the Densmores have since lived and is now owned by a granddaughter of John Densmore Sr.

Thaddeus and his brother Henry owned and operated a general store in Dansville for a time and sold this store and stock to Egbert Rice.

Thaddeus then moved to Mason and after a short stay here, went back to the farm in Dansville, moving back to Mason again where he spent the remainder of his life.

He served as Treasurer of Ingham Co. and upon the death of Postmaster Knight, Thaddeus was appointed "Acting Postmaster" at Mason until the regular appointment of Postmaster Mehan. He was president of the First National Bank for a number of years. In 1883, in company with other Mason people, he made a trip to Europe.

He was engaged in the stock business as a buyer and shipper for many years with his brother Addison and they shipped many carloads of stock and dressed pork to Saginaw, where it was packed and sold to supply lumber camps. He was also interested in the elevator at Mason for some time.

Thaddeus played an important part in the early development of Ingham Township and the City of Mason. He enjoyed hard work and took delight in doing his work well. He was the "outstanding" brother in the family that frequented the homes of the other brothers and sisters and relatives on what we termed as the "Densmore Call."

I want to mention one incident that impressed me as a small boy while working with Uncle Thad may years ago. I was trying to help him build board fence along the highway on one of his farms in Ingham Township and this particular day, Uncle Tad sang the first verse of a song many times over as he worked and I wonder why I remember this song, also I wonder why it so impressed me to remember it for 55 years. Perhaps it was this: It was a sermon to me as a boy from a man that I thought "lived a religious life." The song was: "I am so glad that Jesus loves me."

Thaddeus passed away at Mason April 20, 1895 and his wife Lovisa died May 4, 1912 and all three of the above are buried at Mason, Mich.
