Joseph Raymond ("Raymond") was the fourth of ten children born to Joseph W. Carlon and Macy Stevenson. He was born in Oak Grove (later known as Ruckles) and was raised in Roseburg. In 1900, he was living with a Thomas family in Cottage Grove, Oregon, where he worked as a station agent for the Southern Pacific Railroad. However, he soon moved to Portland, where in 1901 and 1902 he was listed in the city directory as a fireman; in 1902 his sister Bertha was listed with him.

According to marriage records for Multnomah County, Oregon (Volume 13, Page 439), Raymond Carlon married (Matilda Alice) "Alice" Cook, daughter of Smith David "David" and Laura F. Cook on 19 February 1901 in Multnomah County. Alice was with her birth family when she received a telegram notifying her of the accident which had taken Raymond's life. According to a Roseburg newspaper account, Raymond, who was an engineer on a Southern Pacific Railroad switch engine, died in a collision of two engines in the railway yards at 2:00 a.m. on 13 September 1903.

Raymond was buried in the Carlon family plot in the Roseburg I.O.O.F. Cemetery, next to the unmarked grave of his sister, Belle Carlon.

(Following Raymond's death, Alice lived with her parents in Grants Pass for a time and then re-married, to Roy D. McClallen, owner and operator of the McClallen Hotel. Roy and Alice moved to Enterprise in Wallowa County, Oregon by 1920 and spent the rest of their lives there.)
