Marvine W. Alford was born Olive Mae Marvine Wilcoxson on a farm near Fredericksburg. She was always called Marvine. She and her siblings shortened the family name to Wilcox in the 1920s at the instigation of her eldest sister Anna Wilcox Ingram who "got ideas" when she went to college. Her parents did not change their name.

Her parents were Charles E. Wilcoxson and Elizabeth Lofton Wilcoxson, both buried here, as are many of her ancestors and family members. Two of her sisters, Mary Alice Wilcox and Mildred Bertha "Bert" Wilcox to whom she remained close all her life are also buried nearby.

She attended high school in Newport, IN while living with her sister, Ann Wilcox Ingram, a high school teacher there. After graduating from high school in 1934, first in her class of 18, she earned a nursing degree (RN) at the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis. She later attended Purdue University where she met her first husband.

She married twice. In 1941, she married Jack R. Lyons, an engineer, by whom she had one son, J. Robert Lyons. This marriage ended in divorce. In 1952, she married James Gordon Alford by whom she had one daughter, Marvine Mae Alford Rogers. This marriage also ended in divorce. She had two grandchildren.

She lived in Indianapolis all of her adult life. Her sister Mary Alice and widowed mother often lived with her, and she remained close to her other sisters, two of whom retired to Indianapolis after living elsewhere. She worked as a registered nurse and owned, managed, and maintained numerous rental apartments.

She was often a difficult person but was devoted to her children and sisters.
