Abernathy was born May 28, 1923 in Decatur. He was married to Edna Earl Brown April 5, 1962 in Ardmore Oklahoma.
He was a member of Bell Baptist Church and the Greenville Masonic Lodge 335. He recently retired from NGPL. He was a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Earl Abernathy of Decatur; a son, William Abernathy II of Decatur; daughter, Nancy Chenoweth of Decatur; two grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. W.L. Young of Sherman.
