He moved with his family to Indiana in 1815. Volney grew up on the farm on Fourteen Mile Creek and was
educated by his older siblings, Polly and Jonathan.
Volney bought a farm in 1836. It was three miles north of Lexington,
IN, on Hog Creek. He later went into brickmaking and built many
houses near Lexington, some of which still stand. He also added to his
farm through the years and owned 200 acres at the time of his death.
