Melvin, "Butch" grew up on the family farm near DuBois, NE. He had asthma and missed a lot of school from sickness, but this never held him down! He was always on the go and a really hard worker, helping out wherever he could. He enjoyed riding his pony, swimming, fishing and hunting. Melvin quit school and started working full time when he was sixteen at the DuBois elevator and continued there until 1968 when the family moved to Bennet, NE. He started his career as a mason at this time and went on to have his own business. There seemed to be no job that he couldn't tackle and get done. He still made time to enjoy his family with trips and camping, visiting friends and other family members. Local history was another love of his, and he recalled it in detail. Yes, he had a bit of a temper at times, but Rita was his calming factor. In later years he worked at the Syracuse School and was willing to fix and clean whatever needed it, even after retiring he worked at the Douglas RFD cabinet shop in the little town they bought their last home in, Douglas, NE. It is here where that last mountain was too big to climb, cancer took our brave, tough, determined, loved one on Nov. 4, 2009 with his family all beside him. He will forever be loved and missed.

A million times we needed you.
A million times we cried,
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died.

In life we love you dearly,
In death we love you still,
In our hearts you hold a special place
No one else can ever fill.

It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you didn't go alone, for
A part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
