Sarah Jane Fussell was born in Linn County, Iowa, and was the daughter of David E. Fussell (1822-1883) and Anna Rebecca "Becca" Whitlatch (1831-1909). Her grandfather, William Fussell (abt.1771 - 1856), served as a Private during the War of 1812 in Captain John Snelbecker's Ohio Militia.

Her father, David Fussell was born in Muskingum County, Ohio and came to Iowa in 1844. In 1845, while working in Linn County, he had a relationship with Anna Rebecca "Becca" Whitlatch. David Fussell soon returned to Ohio where in March 1846, he married a girl named Rachel Jennings. In 1849, he returned to Iowa to reside in Fayette County with his new wife.

In the 1850 Census of Linn County, Sarah Jane Fussell is listed as the four year old "Jane Whitlatch" residing with her mother in the house of her grandfather John W. Whitlatch. It is not known if Sarah Jane Fussell had any relationship with her parents since she is not found in the 1860 Census.

On July 12, 1863, in Jones County, Iowa, Sarah Jane Fussell was married to William Robinson, a disabled Civil War veteran of Company H 14th Iowa volunteers. They would later have many children.

Prior to 1885, her mother, Rebecca moved to Rice County, Minnesota and later to Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Prior to 1895, Sarah Jane and her husband would move to Faribault, Steele County, Minnesota. It is not known if the fact that her mother lived in this region is the reason for the move to Minnesota.

Her death certificate indicates the names of her parents and indicates that she is buried at Foster Cemetery. Sarah Jane (Fussell) Robinson does not have a tombstone to mark her grave. Finally on July 1, 2014 it became known through cemetery records that she is at rest at her husband's left side (right side as you face William's tombstone). She will someday be forever remembered with a monument to mark her grave.
