Politician, Businessman. He served as Treasurer of the United States from 1905 to 1909, having been appointed to the post by President Theodore Roosevelt and also serving under President William H. Taft. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1865, he entered his family's shipping business in Maine and soon developed a talent for public speaking and organization. These talents brought him to politics, working for James G. Blaine's successful initial bid for the United States Congress. He served as Delegate At Large to the 1888 Republican National Convention and later moved to New York City where he was instrumental in establishing Republican dominance on the East Side in 1893. President William McKinley appointed him Collector of Internal Revenue for the Wall Street district in 1896 and he was reappointed to this post in 1903 by Theodore Roosevelt. His family tree includes Robert Treat, the Royal Governor of Connecticut from 1683 to 1698, Robert Treat Paine, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Stephen Crane, author of "The Red Badge of Courage" and actor Treat Williams.
