Army CWO2 Heffelfinger was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He died of injuries sustained when his OH-58D "Kiowa" helicopter crashed. After graduation, Matt joined the Army in April 2000 to provide the best he could for his wife, Tanya, and their two daughters. He first trained to be a UH-60 Helicopter Mechanic but later was accepted into the Nightstalkers – 3/160th SOAR. Matt attended WOBC in Fort Rucker, Alabama in July 2005 to start flight school and finished at the top of his class. He loved the missions associated with the "Kiowa" so he chose to fly the OH-58D. Matt became a trained PC and loved teaching others – he wanted his fellow pilots to be the best. He served one tour in Afghanistan and two in Iraq; holding the Army Aviator and Parachutist badges. Matt was a fun loving person who liked to play the guitar and could rock out with the best on Rock Band. He also loved spending time with his family whether it meant playing games at home or outdoors hiking. Adventure was another side of Matt and he loved fast cars, motorcycles and skydiving. He had a great sense of humor and would be the best at whatever he attempted. This private, humble man would lend a hand to anyone and brought out the best in others.
