When James arrived in Vietnam, he was assigned to B Company, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division, USARV. James died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from small arms fire, when B Company was engaged by hostile forces.
James was featured in the June 27, 1969 LIFE magazine cover article entitled "The Faces of the American Dead in Vietnam: One Week's Toll."
Survived by his parents, Elbert and Rhode Lorene Workman, and his brothers and sisters; Robert, Brenda, Wanda, Steve, Chester, Robin, Teresa, Jewell and Donald Ray.
