Bill A. Martin, age 89 of Newton, Texas died on November 12, 2009 at his residence.

He was born on Dec. 18, 1919 in Call, Texas to Cory A. and Maud Wommack Martin.

Bill graduated from Kirbyville High School, Kirbyville, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Martin received his Bachelor of Laws Degree from Baylor University on March 2, 1951 and his Juris Doctorate on May 30, 1969. He was admitted to the State Bar of Texas on August 20, 1951 and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the United District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

He was County Attorney in Newton County, Texas, for 13 years from 1953 until 1966. From 1966 to 1988 he served as the District Attorney for the First Judicial District of Texas which included Newton, Jasper, Sabine and San Augustine counties, serving in that office for 22 years, retiring in 1988. He continued in the private practice of law in Newton, Texas, from 1988 until November 12, 2009.

Mr. Martin was married to the late Agnes M. Martin for 57 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Agnes Martin.

He is survived by his sons, Bill A. Martin Jr. of Humble, Texas, Charles C. Martin and wife, Rebecca of San Antonio, Texas, Gregory Martin and wife, Vickie of New Iberia, Louisiana and Michael Martin and wife, Tammy of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Sarah Wilds and husband, Jared of Conroe, Texas, Michael Martin Jr. and wife, Mary of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brian Martin of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, David A. Martin and wife, Renee of New Orleans, Louisiana, Jared M. Martin of Lubbock, Texas and Leanna Kern of San Antonio, Texas; and two great grandchildren.

Interment: Trout Creek Cemetery in Call, Texas.
