Marcella Bybee Oswald, 95, passed away the morning of November 5, 2009, at her home.

Marcella was the third child of David B. Bybee and Minnie Elizabeth Clark and was born on January 20, 1914, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She lived her whole life in Idaho Falls and attended East Side Elementary, Central Junior High and the old Idaho Falls High School on Seventh Street.

She was working at Woolworth's Five and Dime when she met and married Harvey John Oswald of Coltman, Idaho, on January 1, 1935. Harvey and Marcella owned and worked together in three different stores on First Street over a period of 46 years. The one which remains, and is an historical site, is Harvey's Sporting Good Store.

They have raised four children, Gilbert Harvey (Jacqueline) Oswald of Las Vegas, Nevada, Nancy June (Edwin) Wimmer of Boise, Idaho, Dixie Yvonne Oswald of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Roger John (Susan) Oswald of Delano, California. Marcella was very proud to have four college graduates for children, two pharmacists, a nurse and a school teacher. She has eight grandchildren and 12 (soon to be 13) great-grandchildren.

Marcella and Harvey were very active outdoor people, involved in skiing, skating, shooting and fishing. She was Secretary on the Skyline Trap Club and also Secretary of the Idaho Falls Rifle and Pistol Club for many years and became a member of the Shoshone Indian Trap Shooting club with her husband. She taught herself to tie fishing flies from a Herter's Catalog and has become famous in eastern Idaho by marketing her own "Marcella's Trout Fly." In 1947, she was the Idaho State Rifle Champion Marksman. In 1952, she became the state pistol champion, which the U.S. military refused to acknowledge because she was a female. No person could beat her scores with any caliber pistol. She was a natural in shooting a pistol (.22, .38 and .45 calibers). She repaired fishing rods and reels for many broken-hearted fisherman. Also, she taught many anglers in Idaho Falls to fly fish on the front lawn of the store and held many classes in the community on how to tie flies for the city Parks and Recreation Department.

She was an accomplished seamstress who could create a dress from just looking at one. Marcella also sold her hand crafted leather goods and quilts. She created many craft items for her family members and friends, such as dolls and pot holders. She was as famous for her pies as she was for her flies. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church, Eastern Star and the Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge in Idaho Falls.

Harvey passed away in 1980 and Marcella accompanied her daughter, Dixie, traveling in Europe, Hawaii, nearly every state of the union and was known to jump in anytime a car door opened. Marcella enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was looking forward to meeting a new one in April.

Every Tuesday was the day that Marcella and Harvey closed the store to go fishing, skiing, shooting or hunting with the family. She spent many hours in the store on weekends allowing her four children to ski with their father. Marcella accompanied Harvey after store hours to exercise the hunting dogs, which he trained, and raised a wonderful garden every year. We will certainly miss our wonderful mother, but just think of all the things she did in her lifetime! She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and one brother.

The family will visit with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2009, at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home and at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 14, 2009, at Trinity Methodist Church one hour before the service. The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 14, 2009, at Trinity Methodist Church with Brenda Seine officiating. After the service, Marcella will be buried in Taylorview Cemetery next to Harvey. In lieu of flowers, feel free to make donations to your favorite charity. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.buck millerhann.com.
