Rev. Charles Taylor, M.D., D.D., a prominent minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, retired, died at Courtland last Friday, the 5th instant, at the residence of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shackelford. Dr. Charles Taylor was the pioneer missionary who first planted the religious standard of his church in the heathen empire o China, nearly fifty years ago, where he remained for five years inaugurating Christian and educational institutions to the glory of God and salvation of souls. He was an historic figure in the Methodist Church, South. At the first general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, convened at Petersburg, Va., May, 1846, his life was consecrated to the service of God in the ministry, and during his long career there was not the slightest defection from the path of duty. His long and useful life is ended and he has passed to the sphere of heavenly activity and bliss.

CHARLES TAYLORS' GIFTS UNDONE BY PRIVATE IRES

(copyright 2010)

Charles Taylors' gifts undone by private ires.
Talent and intelligence his wealth.
A babe whose birth might merit angel choirs,
Betrayed by grim antagonism's stealth.

Art, Science, Academe signaled his worth.
His father set the mark for selfless love.
Charles, for the mission field, traversed the earth.
A fisted hand shaped inside that glove.

Found lovely Charlotte, yellow Jessamine pride,
In time to aide her state and region raise,
Arms ‘gainst the land for which forefathers died.
To keep slaves slaves, Charles mortgaged his best days.

Some delightful souls cheered the Secession.
Charles' Lost Cause mixed desolate depression.
