Ronald Earl "Ron" Kelley

Ronald Kelley, age 84, of Battle Creek, Iowa, died Thursday, November 12, 2009, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 16, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. The Reverend Kevin J. Freese officiated, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek. Military honors will be conducted by Maple Valley Post No. 364 of the American Legion.

Born December 23, 1924, in Danbury, Iowa, Ronald Earl Kelley was the son of Ellis Preston and Johanna (Berg) Kelley. He grew up and was educated in Danbury, graduating from Danbury High School in 1943. Ron then served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946.

On April 1, 1950, he married Olive Frances Wulf. The couple was blessed with three children, Stuart, Rhonda, and Brian.

Ron worked for Chicago-Northwestern Railroad as a station agent, first at Kiron and later in Battle Creek. When the railroad shut down, he accepted employment in the Battle Creek school district as bus driver and chief mechanic. He served as an EMT on the Battle Creek ambulance crew for many years. Ron was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. He was active in the Battle Creek Lions Club and, in earlier years, served on the Battle Creek City Council.

Survivors include two children and their spouses, Stuart and Kate Kelley of Orlando, FL, and Rhonda and Richard Segebart of Schaller; eight grandchildren, Troy (Carissa) Segebart, Russell (Stacy) Segebart, Sandra Segebart, Sherrie (Jim) Brodersen, Colleen (Jon) Carson, Bridget (James) Broome, Ryan (Kim) Kelley, and Anna (Scott) Palmore; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; as well as many extended family members and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1992; a son, Brian Kelley; his parents; and two brothers, Asa and Eugene Kelley.
