Husband of Rebecca Craig and father of at least eight children: 1. Ann Greer born about 1821, 2. William John Greer born 1823, 3. Alexander Greer born 1831, 4. Samuel Greer born 1836, 5. Joseph Craig Greer born 1838, 6. Charles Greer born 1840, 7. Margaret Greer and 8. Thomas Greer.

James was a son of William Greer and William's first wife, Mary Ann (maiden name unknown). His father, William, was born sometime around 1760, possibly in County Armagh or County Down of Northern Ireland. James' mother, Mary Ann, is thought to have been born about 1765.

James' siblings were John Greer born September 9, 1785, William Greer born August 14, 1786, Susanna Greer born October 3, 1790, and Joseph Greer born about 1801.

He also had a half sister and a half brother. Namely Margaret Greer, born Feb. 2, 1812, and Thomas Greer, born in 1815. Margaret and Thomas were the product of William Greer's second wife, Margaret Jane (maiden name unknown).

Family legend has it that the two youngest sons of William Greer from his first wife Mary Ann - that being James and Joseph, and their half-brother Thomas (the youngest child) all emigrated to Canada about the same time. That being sometime around 1833.
