DOWAGIAC - Leonard Dalton Barkes, 67. Leonard's life began on September 12, 1942, in South Bend, Indiana, the son of Morgan Orestes and Laura Adaline (Eddy) Barkes. He was married on June 14, 1969 to the former Peggy Dykes in Dowagiac. Leonard worked for several years at Clark Equipment and then went to work for Creative Foam from where he retired. He enjoyed fishing and camping. Leonard was a very talented woodworker. His loving family includes his wife Peggy Barkes of Dowagiac; his children Phylis (Larry) Koppman of Summerville, SC; James (Rena) Turnbow of Mishawaka; Ben Turnbow and Tom Turnbow both of Dowagiac; Bruce (Lori) Turnbow of Cassopolis; Yvonne (David Jones) Leighton of Elwood, IN; Jeff Turnbow of Niles; 17 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sisters Delores Garlit of Marshville, MO; Wynona Joyce Lunk of Niles; brother Clifford (Mary) Barkes of Edwardsburg. Leonard passed away November 10, 2009 at his home. He is preceded in death by a brother William Jessie Barkes. His family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-6 pm at Yazel-Clark Chapel (McLauchlin-Clark) where his funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 am led by Pastor Scott Wiles. He will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to St. Jude's Children.
