1.) Mrs. Mark. H. Piper, 1417 Linwood avenue, died at 5 a. m. today at her home after an illness of three weeks. She was a lifelong resident of Flint. Mrs. Piper was 63 years old.

Born here in 1877, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Foss, she was Nellie Mae Foss before her marriage June 26, 1900, to Mark H. Piper, Flint realtor.

Active in church work and women's activities in the city throughout her life, Mrs. Piper was a member of the Court Street Methodist church, the Woman's Society of Christian Service, and Flint Sorosis. Much of her time was devoted to aiding outside groups.

Surviving Mrs. Piper are her husband, who has served as a member of the Genesee county board of supervisors and the county emergency relief commission in his lifelong residence in the county; a daughter, Ruth L. Piper, and two sons, Mark H., Jr. and Howard F. Another son, James H. Piper died July 12, 1938. There are also four grandchildren and three nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. Friday at Court Street Methodist church with Dr. Harold F. Carr officiating. The body will remain at the residence until 1:30 p. m. Friday. Burial will be in Grace Lawn cemetery.

2.) A Great-Granddaughter's View
Nellie was the second-born child of loss. Her mother had lost a child and been widowed twice and her father once. The parents were immigrants who left everything they knew and everyone they loved to make a new life for themselves in this amazing country. They met through work at Michigan School for the Deaf, as her father John and her mother's second husband were employed together and friends.

Nellie met her husband Mark in a similar way. Not only did her father work at MSD, Mark worked there as well. He was valued because he came from a family who signed, as his aunt had been born deaf. Nellie found employment as a bookkeeper at the school. It appeared that for the Foss and Piper family, all roads met at MSD.
