From his father he inherited in 1559 Dillenburg, Siegen, Hadamar, Dietz. etc. and in 1561, after the death of Johann III von Nassau-Beilstein, also Beilstein. From 1578 to 1581 he was stadtholder of Guelders (Netherlands) and in 1579 he accomplished the Union of Utrecht, which can be seen as the beginning of the independence of the Northern Netherlands. In 1584 he founded a sort of university in Herborn.
He was noted for his religious intolerance and avarice.


On the photo a letter written by him in 1561 to his cousin Reinhard Count of Solms and Munzenberg.
