At the height of the Cold War, Mr. O'Mally was sent to Cape Canaveral, Florida as General DynGeneral Dynamics as their leading Aviation Engineer after the Soviets launched a satellite into space in 1957. He hit button and launched John Glenn into orbit in his Mercury capsule. Later he played a major role in the Apollo Program after the Apollo I fire in January 1967.

At Cape Canaveral, there is a plaque bolted to the base of a streetlight on the road leading to Pad 14, the site of the Glenn launching, reads, "O'Malley's Guiding Light."

He survived by his daughter, Kathleen.
