Mr. John F. Sommerlock, a former member of the City Council, died at his home, 783 West Saratoga Street, Saturday morning. He was stricken with apoplexy several weeks ago while sitting in the parlor of his home and was not able afterward to leave his bed.

He was born in Baltimore, September 21, 1832, and received his education in the public schools. When young he learned paper-hanging, went in the business for himself and conducted it until about eight years ago. Later, he kept a paint store.

Mr. Sommerlock was a democrat and served five terms in the City Council. He was first elected to the First Branch from the thirteenth ward and served three terms. Next he was elected to represent the thirteenth and fourteenth wards in the Second Branch. Afterward he held the position of State Wharfinger and resigned the position several years ago.

Five children survive him. They are Mrs. Frank B. Siebold, Mrs. A.W. Lee, Mrs. Frank R. Lare, Miss Ella Sommerlock and John F. Sommerlock. Mr. Sommerlock was a member of the O'Kell Beneficial Association and of Benjamin Franklin Lodge of Masons.
