Richard, the son of Warren Wheeler Dexter and Ruby Cora Dexter of Rutland, VT, enlisted in the US Navy on September 13, 1966 and entered into active duty on January 31, 1967 in Denver CO. He arrived in Vietnam on May 29, 1968 and was assigned as a Medical Corpsman to H&S Company, attached to Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
During a platoon combat patrol west of the Khuong My village complex Hieu Duc District the Marines encountered sniper fire, HM3 Dexter was hit in the neck and mortally wounded. Evacuated to the US Station Hospital NSA facility in DaNang where he died from the enemy gunshot wound. (thank you Victor Vilionis)

Hospitalman Richard A. Dexter Killed in Combat near Da Nang, S. Vietnam
The Vietnam War has claimed its ninth victim from the Rutland area. Hospitalman 3C Richard A. Dexter, USN, 23, was killed Tuesday while serving with the U.S. Marines near Da Nang. He was shot in the neck.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warren W. Dexter of 4 Ave. B. were notified at 7:30 p.m. by Lt. Cmdr. James Jeffords, USNR, of North Shrewsbury. Jeffords a lawyer is the highest ranking member of the Naval Reserve in the area.
Hospitalman Dexter was attached to Co. B, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. The Marine Corps does not have its own medics and depends on the Navy for medical support. He went on active duty with the Navy in January 1967. Before his assignment to Vietnam, he was assigned to the Naval Hospital at the San Diego, Calif. Marine Base. Hospitalman Dexter arrived in Vietnam on May 29 to begin his tour of duty there. (thank you Victor Vilionis)
