John Lewis Cross was married 15 Jun 1878 to Sarah B. Kennedy (1852-1921)in Colfax, Whitman County, Washington. Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Kennedy and Margaret Harris. John and Sarah had four children:

1. Effie Rosetta Cross 1880-1952
2. William Hill Cross 1882-1953
3. Claude Francis Cross 1888-1956
4. Vera Ann Cross 1890-1983

At the age of 21 years John Lewis Cross answered the call for volunteers and he enlisted in Company A, second regiment of Minnesota Cavalry, on the 20th day of October 1863. He was honorably discharged from the service in October 1866.

John L. Cross was a member of the Nathaniel Lyon Post of the G.A.R. for a number of years at Colfax, later being transferred to the Ross Post of Gresham.

John Lewis Cross died in Boring, Clackamas County, Oregon the result of a second stroke and was buried in Gresham, Multnomah County, Oregon.

J. L. Cross Laid to Rest at Gresham

The funeral of John L. Cross who died Monday at his home near Boring, took place yesterday morning at
10 o'clock. The internment took place at Gresham Cemetery.

Thos. Ginder, Norman Smith and Henry Kane composed a committee of The M. A. Ross Post G.A.R., who attended the funeral going from here to Boring on the O.W.P. car. Many friends and neighbors attended the Funeral and followed the remains to the cemetery where the last sad rites for the brother veterans was performed.

The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. A. B. Calder. The pastor took For his text, "It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting." Eccl, 7.2

There were two sons present, Claude of Boring, and Will, a son from Spokane, also a daughter, Vera.

Rev. David Wolfe assisted at the grave.
