Eliza was the eldest daughter of Gov. W. B. Seabrook and his wife Margaret (Hamilton) Seabrook. She was raised at Gun Bluff Plantation on Edisto Island and first married (2/7/1838 at Liberty Hall on Edisto Island) Edward Wilkinson Mikell (1816-1839). She married Josiah Edward Smith on 5/4/1842 at Liberty Hall on Edisto Island
