Frank P. Prater
A memorial service was held April 24, 2009,at Andersonville National Cemetery in Andersonville, Ga., for Frank P. Prater, 88, a native of Davis.
Prater, who lived in Decatur, Ga., graduated in 1939 from Davis High School. He joined the U.S. Marines and was serving as a guard at the U.S. Embassy in Tientsin, China, at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The next day, Dec. 8, 1941, he was interned by the Japanese and held as a prisoner of war until September 1945.
During his recuperation at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital, he met his future wife, the late Virginia E. Schwalm, a U.S. Navy nurse who cared for him. They were married in August 1946. Prater was a pharmacist.
Prater was preceded in death by his parents, James C. and Birdie Mae (Bailey) Prater.
He is survived by five children, Karla Bowman of Lilburn, Ga., Frank Lynn Prater of East Sparta, Ohio, Paul D. Prater of Coshocton, Ohio, Kerri Cunningham of Gause, Texas, and Polly Albitz of Kennesaw, Ga., and nine grandchildren.
