Born on a farm north of Lincoln, Missouri, Katherine was the youngest child of Henry Ficken and Anna Margaret Cordes. She attended college in Missouri, where she met Gottlob Charles Cast. They married in Sedalia, MIssouri, in 1908. Katherine and Gottlob had two children, Anita Margaret, born in 1913, and Karl Friedrich, born in 1917. They lived in Iowa while Gottlob taught at Grinnell College and Central College and in Nebraska while he was principal of the training school at Peru State Normal. In 1919, Gottlob began teaching German at Lawrence College, and he and Katherine made their home in Appleton, WI, during his long career there. They had a summer cottage on Long Lake which provided wonderful family time with children and grandchildren. Katherine was a founding member of the Town and Gown Book Club, created in Appleton in 1922. Membership was composed of community women and women affiliated with Lawrence College. After her husband's death in 1969, she moved to Ohio to be near their daughter.
