When PFC Palma arrived in Vietnam on 19 Dec 1967, he was assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Division. He had joined the US Marine Corps in April of the same year.

Raymond was killed in combat by small arms fire during Operation Badger Tooth, a nasty battle, along with 48 of his fellow Marines on 27 December 1967. It occurred on the border of Quang Tri and Thua Thien Provinces. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal.
