Is this Colonel Kennon McElroy?
Did they know each other before the Civil War, in 1858?
Or did Kennon McElroy write Miss Mary's name (and his name) in the album at a later time, in December 1861?

What is the significance of the date February 22, 1858?

November 4, 1973

"There was a company of Mississippi soldiers camped down by Fairview (the old fairgrounds on Fairview Street)," she continued, "and they used to come up here (to the house on Loudoun Street) and dance. They rolled the carpets up in the front room and had dances right here.

"Of course that's hearsay now," she said, "as they related it to me."

Mrs. Johnston does have some proof for the stories though. A remembrance book sitting in the front room has countless signatures from the Mississippi soldiers and several poems written in honor of Miss Lizzie Mary Johnston who entertained the Confederate volunteers who were far from home.

"One of the oldest daughters—Miss Lizzie—she fell in love with one of the soldiers" recounted Mrs. Johnston. "He came back after I was married and asked to see her. I was sent over to tell her and she said 'No, I'm too old and poorly.' She refused to see him. He was a nice old gentleman with white whiskers. He even brought his wife."
