He was first married to Polly Jane McConnaughy about 1843 in Cook Twp., Westmoreland, PA. The children known were Martha K. (1843-1925), John Harvey (1853-1902), Robert B. (1858-1886), Elsworth (~1861-), and Ira (~1866-).
After Polly's death in 1875, he married Catherine Mower Miller in Fairfield Twp., Grundy County, Iowa. She had been previously married to Asher Miller.
William was a merchant in PA. After moving to Grundy County, IA, he purchased 800 acres and farmed. He later returned to PA and remained there about 10 years, moving then to Wayne County, Ohio where he opened a store in Cedar Valley. He returned to Grundy County, IA and his farm there.
