Leland Ira Doan was born in North Bend, Nebraska, son of Ira Doan and Hester Spencer. He was educated at the University of Michigan from 1913 to 1916. In 1917 he married Ruth Alden Dow, daughter of Herbert H. Dow, an din that same year entered the employ of Dow Chemical, beginning in the sales department. He moved up to assistant sales manager, general sales manager, and from 1938 to 1947 was vice-president and secretary. In the latter year he was named president of Dow Chemical, serving until 1962, whe he became chairman of the executive committee until 1970. He was a director from 1935 to 1972.

Leland Doan's father had been a physician, and at the University of Michigan Leland had specialized in chemical engineering. When he joined the sales staff at Dow, he found the sales functions were concentrated in the hands of just a few people. In order to expand these activties he establised a number of branch offices, with a corps of salesmen in each of the company's specialties. As one method of promoting sales he catalogued information about prospective customers, including even their hobbies. As he moved up the sales ladder at the firm he developed markets for new products such as magnesium, plastics and pharmacuticals. Then, when Willard Dow was killed in a plane crash in 1949, Leland became his successor. During his presidency Doan was responsible for the company's greatest diversification and expansion.

A Presbyterian and a Republican, he and Ruth Dow had two sons, Leland Alden Doan and Herbert Dow Doan, and a daughter, Dorothy Doan. His second wife was Mildred Mellus, whom he married in 1950.
