Born Aug. 30, 1923, in Coalfield, he was the son of Lloyd Adcox and Cecil Ruffner Adcox.
Mr. Adcox graduated with honors from Coalfield High School in 1940. While at Coalfield High School, he was a member of the first state championship six-man football team. Following high school, Mr. Adcox entered the U.S. Army and served his country in World War II. He remained in the Army for 10 years and earned the rank of master sergeant.
After his return home, he founded Jefferson Avenue Motors, which later became Adcox Motors in Oak Ridge and Oliver Springs. In addition, he was employed by Valley Pontiac of Oak Ridge for 30 years.
Mr. Adcox attended Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
According to his family, Mr. Adcox, or "Dean" as he was known, was very proud of the accomplishments of his family, friends and the people of the Coalfield community. His family said he was fond of his heritage and shared stories of his childhood with all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen R. Adcox, and by a brother, James Adcox.
Mr. Adcox is survived by his daughter, Linda Diaz, of Atlanta, Ga.; his son, Ralph Adcox, of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Damien Diaz, Gabriel Diaz, Jennifer Adcox, Stephanie Adcox and Jordan Adcox; one great-grandson; his sister, Sandra Young and husband, Ralph, of Harriman; and by three brothers, Herbert Adcox and wife, Jean, and Tommy Adcox and wife, Mary Katherine, all of Chattanooga, and Ray Adcox and wife, June, of Oak Ridge.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Dr. Bill Edmonds officiating.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
