Like his father, Frank became a physician, graduating from of the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore in 1859. He worked the next year as a resident physician for the Baltimore City Almshouse. On October 11, 1860 Frank enlisted as an assistant surgeon, (first lieutenant) medical staff, of the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Yuma, California until September 1861 and Alcatraz Island and San Francisco until October 1864. While stationed in California, Frank met and married Susan Haseltine, the daughter of a merchant. By 1865, Frank was stationed at Ft. Churchill, Nevada and promoted to Brevet Major. In 1866, he served at Ft. Buffalo, New York, then in 1867 Frank went to Ft. Hays, Kansas, his last army appointment. At Ft. When all treatment measures proved unsuccessful, Frank was given a leave of absence from the army. His condition was also affected by a previous bout of typhoid. At age 34, Frank's health was described by his fellow army physicians as "delicate". In 1871, he went home to Pleasantville to spend his final days. Frank and Susan had two daughters, ages 3 and 1. A third child, their son Richard, was born July 7th, only a week before Frank's death on July 14, 1871. Frank's father, Dr. Richard Mechem died two days later on July 16th.
