HAZELTON -- Paul W. Kurtz, 71, Hazelton, died Nov. 23, 1997, in the Linton hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hazelton Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Ben Dove officiating. Burial will be in Hazelton Cemetery, with military rites provided by Hazelton American Legion.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, and from 9-11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, and for one hour prior to services at the church, Friday.
Paul was born Oct. 12, 1926, in Bismarck, the son of Paul V. and Lina (Mandigo) Kurtz. He attended Hazelton grade school and Hazelton High School until 1943, and graduated from agricultural college in Crookston, Minn. in 1944. He returned home to farm in a partnership with his brother, Calvin. He entered the U.S. Army July 7, 1951, and served in Korea during the Korean War. After his discharge on May 11, 1953, he returned to Hazelton and married Delphine Smith on Feb. 26, 1956, in Bismarck. They made their home on a farm, where they raised their four children.
In the 1950s and 1960s he raced the family's thoroughbred horses in country fairs and rodeos throughout the state of North Dakota. He was very instrumental in organizing the Hazelton rodeo from 1947 to 1970. In 1983, he and his brother celebrated their 100-year centennial family farm.
He served as president of the Hazelton Credit Union for more than 30 years, as a past president of Hazelton Farmer's Union Oil Company for many years, and was a member of the Hazelton American Legion.
Paul enjoyed raising livestock and actively farmed until his death.
He is survived by his wife, Delphine; one son, Paul S., Hazelton; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Elaine and Richard Malsam, and Natalie and William Gunnerson, all of Bismarck, and Carol Southwood, Mandan; four grandchildren, Jennifer Kurtz, Lindsay Malsam, Emily Gunnerson and Kylee Southwood; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia and Jack Dresner, Pamona, Calif., and Beverly and Dirk DenBaars, Tucson, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Calvin. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)
