James Clarkson, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. P.W. Whalen, Wednesday, February 3, 1926, after an extended illness. Mr. Clarkson was 81 years old.
James Livingston Clarkson was born December 27, 1844 at Maple Valley, Virginia. He was educated at Essex Acadamy, ? and Queen County Virginia. He served in the Civil war in the 9th Virginia Calvalry.
Mr. Clarkson moved to Iowa at the age of 20, and later moved to St. Louis. He owned the Clarkson sawmill at Leeper, Mo. and built the Mo. Southern Pacific Railway from Lepper to Ellington.
He moved to Butler County in 1898 where he was again engaged in the lumber business and farming. Mr. Clarkson retired from active life in 1916.
Mr. Clarkson is survived by a widow, Mrs. Amy Clarkson, and four children. Funeral service were conducted by the Rev. Thogmorton at the residence. Col. H.N. Phillips gave a very fitting and touching tribute to his dead comrade. The body was laid to rest in Bellfontaine cemetery in St Louis.
