REV. LACKEY, BAPTIST LEADER, IS DEAD AT 81
The Rev. R. W. Lackey, the first executive secretary of the Southern Baptist General Convention of California, died last night in his home at 2926 E. Illinois Ave. after a long illness. He was 81,
After serving as a Southern Baptist missionary in the San Joaquin Valley for a year, the Rev. Lackey wrote a proposed constitution and bylaws in 1940 for the convention. His proposals were adopted by messengers of the state's Southern Baptists and he was elected to head the new organization.
SERVED AS EDITOR
He held the post for four years serving also as the editor of the convention's newspaper; The California Southern Baptist.
After stepping down as executive secretary in 1944, he did missionary work for a few years in Central California and was elected as an official church missionary in 1947. He retired in 1949 but later served as the pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church in Kerman.
WROTE CONSTITUTION
The Rev. Lackey also is credited with writing the constitution for the first Southern Baptist Association, or regional organization, in California. The constitution, with slight changes was used by all 28 of the denomination's state associations by 1953.
A native of Cameron, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, the Rev. Lackey was a minister for 60 years. He was a pastor of churches in Wilbuton, Westville, Drumright and Oklahoma City, Okla., before moving to Bakersfield in 1939.
He attended the Oklahoma Baptist College and taught school before entering the ministry.
50TH ANNIVERSARY
He and his widow, Alma V., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1958.
In addition to his widow, he is survived by two sons, W. R. Lackey of Bass Lake, Madera County, and L. H. Lackey of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Neal Pickett, and Mrs. Doretha Stuart, both of Fresno; three brothers, Pink Lackey of Oklahoma City, Henry Lackey of Lamont, Kern County, and the Rev. Emmett Lackey of Greenacres, Kern County; a sister, Mrs. Florence Jackson of Sonoma; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Lisle Calaveras Chapel. Interment will be in Belmont Memorial Park.
