Ezra Crowell, known in the community as Squire Crowell, was the son of Deacon Paul Crowell and his wife Reliance Cobb. Ezra dealt in provisions, salt manufacture, ran an inn/tavern, and drew up legal documents for his fellow villagers. He married m. 1st Bathsheba Smith of Chatham 13 Jan 1788. Following her death, he married 2nd 14 Feb 1819 Chatham Betsy (Paine), the widow of Nehemiah Hamilton.
