William B. is the son of William C. (Crockett?) Clem and Elizabeth Anderson Clem.

He enlisted in Giles County, Tennessee probably in October, 1861 in Capt. W. G. Hunnicutt's Company E, 32nd Tennessee Infantry Regiment which was made up of men from Giles County. Other officer's he served under were First Lt. Miller Bass, Second Lt. G. B. Reasons and Brevet Second Lt. Robert F. Holland.

William was the husband of Martha H. Harden/Hardin who he married on 6/7/1848 in Athens, Limestone County, Tennessee.
