Alpheus Simmons BUTTS is age 22 in the 1850 cenus of Hancock County, Georgia in the home of James Irwin BUTTS. He is a son of James I. and his first wife, Elizabeth SIMMONS. His middle initial "S." may have been for Simmons.

Alpheus married Elisa M. HARTON in Hancock County, Georgia on 19 April 1855. Less than four years later on 2 January 1859, he married Sarah O. HARTON, Elisa's sister. They were daughters of Tabitha HARTON.

In the War Between The States, Alpheus S. BUTTS served in the 7th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry (State Guards). This regiment was organized in the summer of 1863 and mustered into the Confederate army to serve in local defense within the state of Georgia. It was disbanded in February 1864. On the roll of Company A, Beman Mounted Infantry, is Alpheus S. BUTTS, enlisted as a private and discharged with the rank of corporal.
