Private Vest first joined the United States Marine Corps. in November of 1921 and was assigned to Company A, Marine Barracks, at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, CA. He saw sea duty, Marine Detachmnet, on the USS Mississippi. He saw shore duty at Marine Barracks, Naval Air Station, San Diego, CA; Guard Company Number #1, Marine Barracks, Puget Sound Navy Yard, WA; and the Marine Barracks, Pacific Coast Torpedo Station, Keyport, WA. He was finally honorably discharged on November of 1924, at the Marine Detachment, Marine Barracks, Naval Ammunition Depot, Iona Island, NY. He was awarded the Marine Corps. Good Conduct medal and the Honorable Discharge lapel pin for his service.
