CARLOS A. VALADE FORMER CANYON CITY MERCHANT DIES AT SON'S HOUSE

Carlos Anthony Valade, one of Grant County's pioneers, and one of best known and respected citizens of this county died at the home of his son Ralph, in John Day, July 12 at the age 74 years. Funeral services were held from the Driskill Mortuary Tuesday July 16 the Rev. Mrs. Josie Bach officiated. At the chapel and graveside services were conducted by Lodge No. 34 A. F. & A. M. Internment was in the Canyon City cemetery beside his wife, Belle Glover Valade, who preceded him in death in 1940.

Carlos, as he was best known, was born December 19, 1872 in Portland. Came to Prairie City with his mother when he was a small child and where he resided for some years, later locating on a ranch near Dayville, where he spent most of his life. Some years ago he and two other ranchers of the Dayville section purchased the then very prominent Canyon City Commercial Co. store from the firm of Patterson, Woldenberg and Schroeder, and operated that store for several years. During the past few years Mr. Valade has been bookkeeper and assistant in the Ed Chinouth store at Dayville.

In November 1889, Mr. Valade and Belle Glover of Dayville were united in marriage and to that union were born six children: Earl and Walter of Dayville, Ralph of John Day, Darrell of La Grande, Edna Blaser of Chico, California and May Robertson of Dayville; also twelve grandchildren and a host of friends remain to mourn his passing.

Mr. Valade was prominent in the Masonic order, active in the social and commercial life of his community and a man whom all respected and liked. He was really one of the true sons of the early pioneers as his mother taught the first school in the town of Astoria, Oregon.
