He died in 1796, at the home of David Dickey, while making a trip to Halifax. Elizabeth died 04 February, 1809 in St. Mary's, East River Forks, Guysborough, Nova Scotia. She is buried on a small Island in the Lake, a short distance up the East River of St. Mary's, above the Forks but her gravesite has not been found.
Mathew was in Captain John Gregg's scouts in June, 1746, in the old French war.
Matthew and Elizabeth moved to Truro, Nova Scotia with all of Elizabeth's brothers, where Matthew became one of the Grantees of Truro Township.

John Morrison's Company of Militia for Onslow ( N.S. Archives RG1v.164 p. 163 ) 3. 26 March 1772 in a deed he is referred to as Lieut. Matthew Taylor 4. 28 Aug. 1776 he was appointed a Capt. in the Truro Militia ( NSArchives RG1 v. 168 p. 474 ) 5. 1777 referred to as Capt. in the Township Minutes. Documents existing for his time here in Nova Scotia refer to him as : farmer, yeoman, husbandman, miller, gentleman, Esq., Lieut. and Capt. (supplied by Heather Taylor Facey)
