This grave marker is a cenotaph, as Stoughton's body was lost at sea, while traveling to New York aboard the Mauretania.

He had been in the National Guard in Missouri, and was a dry goods merchant in St. Joseph, Missouri at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife Jessie (Brittan) Walker, a child, and his brother Francis. Another son predeceased him at age 16.
