Son of William H. and Opal Cotton Mathews.∼William "Bill" H Mathews IV was the only son of William "Doc" H Mathews III (1886 - 1940) and Opal Cotton Mathews (1910 - 1985).

NICHOLASVILLE - William "Bill" H. Mathews IV, 75, husband of Lorna Mathews, passed away Friday, Nov 20, 2009 after an illness. He was born Jan 7, 1934 in Jessamine County to the late William H. and Opal Cotton Mathews Stivers. Bill was self employed in sales, a US army veteran, longtime Nicholasville businessman, former employee of IBM and graduate of Transylvania University being a member of Phi Kappa Alpha. Additional survivors are three children, Anne Mathews (Alec) Kempe of VA, Susan Mathews of Nicholasville, William H (Dorothy) of Versailles, a step daughter Melanie Fransen of Lexington, four grandchildren, Charles and Frasher Kempe, Allen and Hannah Williams. Services will be 11am Mon at Betts & West Funeral Home in Nicholasville with Chaplin Jim Harrison. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-5pm Sun. Bearers will be Ted Moss, Bobby Kanatzar, George Overstreet, Dr. J.B. Hunter, Sid East, Bobby and Tommy Dean and William Q. Muir. Honorary bearers will be his basketball teammates from Transylvania and Marion Williams.
