ELI PACKER.
Eli Packer occupies a prominent place in the esteem of the people of Marietta township, Marshall county, and is universally respected, fair dealing having been his watchword with his fellow men. He is optimistic, looking on the bright side of life and he never complains at the rough places in the road, knowing that life is a battle in which no victories are won by the slothful, but that the prize is to the vigilant and the strong of heart.

Mr. Packer was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, June 19, 1854, and he is the son of Elisha and Asenath (Mendenhall) Packer, the father born in Jefferson county, Ohio, October 30, 1821, and the mother was born in Harrison county, Ohio, February 11, 1821. They were married in the latter county and their deaths occurred in Jefferson county, Ohio, that of the father on June 28, 1898, and that of the mother on January 7, 1858. Elisha Packer was a farmer, a Republican in politics and a member of the Hicksite Friends church. There were eight sons in his family, five of whom are living, Milton having died in 1854 and Allen's death occurred on February 2, 1904. The paternal grandfather, Aaron Packer, was a native of Pennsylvania, born in 1787, and his wife, Rebecca Deweese, was born in 1785. They spent their last days in Clark county, Ohio, the grandfather dying in 1877. His first wife, Rebecca Deweese, died on April 5, 1851, and his second wife, Ann Bullen Packer, died on June 8, 1889. Elisha Packer, mentioned above, was twice married, his last wife being Grace McBride, by whom three children were born, Seth, Benjamin and Alice, all living. His children were all born and reared in Jefferson county, Ohio.

Eli Packer of this review was reared on the farm and educated in the public schools and in the academy at Springboro, Ohio. He began farming for himself early in life and in 1878 and the year following he bought one hundred and sixty acres of land where he now resides; thus for more than thirty years he has been a resident of this locality and has taken part in its development, becoming well known and being regarded as one of the leading farmers of the community. He added eighty acres to the original purchase, and has made all the improvements on the same. He has a pleasant home and a good grade of live stock always on his place. He has been very successful as a general farmer.

In politics Mr. Packer is a Republican and he and his wife are members of the Congregational church.

Mr. Packer was married on February 5, 1880, to Martha Vale, who was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, March 31, 1855, the daughter of William and Mary (Skeeles) Vale, the former a native of York county, Pennsylvania, his birth having occurred there on January 27, 1825, while the mother was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, June 13, 1832; the father's death occurred in the last named county in 1904, and the mother is still living at an advanced age. They were the parents of eleven children, of whom nine are living, six daughters and five sons. Mrs. Packer's grandparents, Elisha and Martha (Kirk) Vale, were born in York county, Pennsylvania. In politics Mr. Vale was a Republican and he belonged to the Friends church.

Five children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Packer, namely: Garrah M., born June 22, 1882; Anna M., born May 5, 1887; Roscoe W., born September 30, 1892; Theodore B., born March 29, 1896, and Asenath, born January 9, 1899. The last named died in infancy.
