Bessie M. DeVerna, Caro, Passed away on Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Fisher Convalescent Home in Mayville, at the age of 90. She was born May 10, 1914, on the family homestead in Watertown Township and was a lifelong resident of Tuscola County. She graduated valedictorian of her class at Mayville High School in 1932, and held a BS from Eastern Michigan University. On May 20, 1950, Bessie McKnight married Donald DeVerna. He preceded her in death on May 29, 1983. Bessie was a postal worker in Mayville, a social worker for Tuscola County, a legal secretary for Bates Wills, and for more than 50 years, a landlord for numerous apartments and houses. Bessie enjoyed people and spent a lot of time working on her family tree, reading and Michigan history. She was a member of the Caro United Methodist Church. She is survived by one son and his wife, James and Beth DeVerna of Troy; three grandchildren, Lauren and twins Kyle and Matthew DeVerna; her brother-in-law, Kenneth and Thelma DeVerna of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bud (George) McKnight, and her sister, Catherine Marsh. Funeral service will be held at Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Monday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ray Karr officiating. Burial will be in Watertown Township Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Collon Funeral Home on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. and on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Caro Community Hospital Endowment Foundation.
