He was 34 years old. It was reported that Donald died from unknown causes. His body was recovered. Donald was born on September 26th, 1934 in Chicago,Illinois. CPT Button is on panel 67E, line 005 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.
Funeral services for Captain Donald B. Button USAF of Charleston will be held tomorrow at 12:30pm at John Wesley Methodist Church.
Captain Button died March 24th in a plane crash in Thailand. Burial, directed by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., will be in the National Cemetery in Beaufort.
Captain Button was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 26, 1934 and had lived in Charleston since the age of ten. He attended Charleston High School and The Citadel.
He took his flight training at Mission, Texas and Laredo, Texas. He flew KC 97s at Hunter Air Force Base, Savannah, for two years and then went to Albany, Georgia for three years to fly KC 135s in the Strategic Air Command.
He was sent to the University of Wyoming for 18 months where he earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering. He was a member of Sigma Tau National Honorary Engineering Fraternity. For the past seven months he had been serving as slight operations officer at Ledorn Air Force Base, Thailand.
He was a Methodist.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Barbara Smiley Button; a daughter, Donna, and three sons, Roger, Russell and Gary Button, all of Memphis, Tennessee; his mother, Mrs. Daisy Button of Charleston and one brother, Richard Button of Charleston and Siagon.
The last time I saw you, I was but a child living in Okinawa, Japan. I remember your smile and your good nature. And like your brother (Uncle Thomas) who died in WW2 on D-Day, I will never forget your sacrifice. Rick Button.
