James was an lawyer and worked with his brother, Col. John B. Hemphill, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. James served as a First Lieutenant, 20th Miss. Infantry, Civil War and was in Lee's Army at Appomatox. He represented Attala County in the Miss. Legislature. After the war he began teaching and became a popular educator. James died at his father's old home, near Weir, Miss.
