Helen Joyce Huskey, 60, a resident of Mosier, Ore., died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital in Hood River.

She was born May 14, 1946, in Ashland, Ore., to Clarence August Henry and Lorraine Ethelda (Holmes) Yerges. Helen was baptized on Nov. 17, 1946, in the First Methodist Church in Ashland. She was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in West Sacramento on June 5, 1960.

Helen spent most of her young life in West Sacramento, Calif. She graduated from West Sacramento Elementary School on June 2, 1960. Helen graduated from Clarksburg High School on June 12, 1964. She graduated from Sacramento City College as a vocational nurse Sept. 10, 1965.

When Helen was in school, she was involved in 4-H taking sewing, cooking, and crafts. In high school, Helen received her athletic letter from being on the swim team. Later, as an adult, she also taught clothing, foods, and crafts for 4-H. She also worked as an assistant leader in Cub Scouts when her boys were young.

Helen was a volunteer at Hood River Hospital and at Mosier School in the reading program and in the office. Helen was instrumental in starting the Mosier Quilt Club. Her hobbies were quilting, crocheting, sewing, and doll collecting.

Helen met her husband, Wayne Huskey, in Sacramento, where she was his nurse at Mercy Hospital. They married in West Sacramento at the Immanuel Lutheran Church on Dec. 9, 1967. Later they moved to the Oregon and Washington area where they had two boys and adopted two more girls. Helen and her Wayne were Foster Parents of the Year during this time.

Helen is survived by her husband, Wayne Douglas Huskey; sons, Jason Huskey and James and his wife, Tangi Orlando; daughters, Brenda and her husband, Steve Jallen, and Sandra and her husband, Brandon Shattuck; loving grandchildren, Alishia Jallen, Aaron Jallen, Tiffany Jallen, Alec Huskey, Allison Huskey, Nakia Orlando, Taylor Orlando, Jacob Shattuck, Anne Joyce Shattuck, named after her grandmother; brothers, August and his wife, DeAnn Yerges, David and his wife, Trish Yerges; sister, Cleone (Lonnie) Thorpe; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and oldest son, John Wayne Douglas Huskey.

A viewing/visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 6, from 3:30-7 p.m. at Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 7, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hood River at 11 a.m., with interment following at Mosier Cemetery. Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Family First in The Dalles, Mosier School, and Good Shepherd.
