Newt raised his sister Fannie's daughter, Mary Jane Smith Keith , when she became orphaned at about age two.

Newt owned a store located 3 miles west of Lone Grove, Oklahoma, on U.S. Highway 70. At 6 p.m. on 15 September 1933, he was attacked by a lone suspect and robbed of a small amount of money. The hijacker severely beat him over the head with a bottle of lubricating oil. This was the 4th time Uncle Newt had been robbed. The crime was investigated by Carter County Sheriff, Elmer Byrd, and Deputy Sheriff, Hugh Cunningham.
