Two Men Killed By Monon Train Terrible Tragedy At Mitchell
John Wade and Mathrw Jeames Ground To Pieces Under a Mono Freight
Bodies Presented a Growsome Spectacle With Heads Crushed To Pulp
A terrible accident occurred at 1:20 last Friday in which Matthew Jeames of Medora and John Wade of Ft. Ritner were instantly killed by a Monon train, their bodies being horribly mangled and Jeames' head crushed into a pulp.
The men had come to Mitchell to negotiate a timber deal and were walking down the Monon tracks to a saw mill. At the point where the men were killed are three tracks and on one of these a switch engine was pushing a cut of cars. The men stepped aside to another track but failed to see the approach of a train from an opposite direction. They were caught and instantly killed, their bodies mangled and Wade's head ground into a pulp by the tracks of the engine that struck them and under which they fell. No one witnessed the accident, and it was some moments before their bodies were found ground almost to pieces.
The remains were picked up and carried to the Monon depot and Coroner Voyles summoned from this city. Matthew Jeames is a prominent citizen of Medora, married and has a family. He is engaged in farming and timber business.
John Wade, his companion is married and resided at Fort Ritner. He was a prominent citizen of that place, a brother of Mrs. Henry Hahn, West 12th Street, this city, and an uncle of Mrs. Fred Cannedy. The Cannedy and Hahn families left on the 4:30 train this afternoon for Mitchell, and will accompany the remains of Wade, when taken to his late home at Ft. Ritner. The accident was one of the many in recent years that have occurred at or near Mitchell crossing.
